On “Liking the Song Before It Was Cool”

In some ways I can empathize with it. Attempting to prove that you can predict trends is not one of them. But this is:

Some time ago I discovered an EP called The Cassa Nova Sessions by Jason Mraz. The songs on it were stripped-down acoustic takes of Jason Mraz songs from previous albums and some songs set to make their album debut in the near future. I really enjoyed one song in particular, it was mellow, easy to play on guitar, and had memorable lyrics that caught on very quickly. I liked that song.

That song was “I’m Yours” - and eventually the spawn of satan that is pop radio discovered it. At first, I was excited, because I was happy that the song and the artist were getting some national attention, and I already knew how to play one of the most popular campfire songs of our generation. But as we are all woefully aware, that song was played again and again until it was beaten into the ground and no one, including me, wanted to hear it again. The song’s popularity was it’s own undoing and no one will enjoy it for a few more years, and even then it will only be for nostalgic value.
